Short presentation

Born 1968, Miki Velciov lives and works in Timișoara, Romania. As graduate of BA / MA Painting Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, West University of Timisoara, he works at the interference of painting, object, installation, video and land art. As a theme, he studies the primordial elements of nature: earth, water, air and fire, making a radiography of the hidden layers of reality, which reveals the life hazard of so-called meaningless creatures, such as insects or plants. During the master’s degree, he focused on the earth and its contained life forms. But, moreover, he intended to go beyond matter itself by approaching the social dimension of this element (One cubic meter of life, 2015). From installations such as Uprooting (2013) or In Terra Pax (2016) to Breath In / Breath Out (2017), his work critically reveals the impact of the socio-political systems on reality, resulting in the loss of balance between human and nature, the disastrous effects of excessive exploitation of the resources and the phenomenon of migration during the 21st century. Starting with the Big Brother (2014) and the Oculus series (2015, 2016), Velciov has become interested in studying the omnipresence of surveillance and excessive control in the totalitarian societies. In fact, the artist is known for his privileged point of view installations, which reveal, through the various forms of spatial restriction, the illusion of absolute control and the impossibility of Utopian perfection of these systems (Shock Wave / 2016, Temporary Fencing / 2016, Turgidum / 2018, Triandră / 2019).
